Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve saved a WiFi network to your Android device and then sometime after you try to add the same network on your other device OR a friend asks you to share the password, but unfortunately you don’t remember it.
Well, This happens to most of us. And the first thing we try to retrieve the password is going to WiFi settings, but only to face a fail because Android doesn’t allow you to view WiFi password as your Windows PC does.
Android phones store by default all the WiFi passwords to which you connect, to be able to link directly to them if you need it later. But, what happens when you are the one who wants to access that password, too, for example, share it with someone? All those keys that you have accessed at some point are stored in a file in the phone’s internal memory.
What does that mean? That accessing that file is not exactly easy. In fact, in order to do so, you will need to root on your phone. When you have it, it will be enough to download an application from Google Play or access through the File Explorer.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t view WiFi password on Android. Although not accessible by a user, but Android does save WiFi passwords to a file called WPA_supplicant.conf located under /data/misc/wifi directory on your device.

How to view WiFi Password on Android
Root access required
- Download and install a File Manager app with Root Access, we recommend the free ES File Explorer app.
- Enable Root access on ES File Explorer app from the slide-in left panel. And grant the app root permission when it asks.
- Go to /data/misc/wifi/ directory on your device.
- Open the wpa_supplicant.conf file and you’ll find your saved WiFi networks here with the password for each.
- For your understanding, SSID here will be your Network name and PSK is the password for the associated SSID.
