Different Ways To Fix Error 651

The error 651 message is common on desktop PCs with Windows 10 through Windows 7. However, it usually appears in a small pop-up window. The real text varies a bit, relying on the cause of the connection issues, but it always includes this text:

However, an irritating error 651 is a relatively minor issue and can’t cause a PC to shut down, restart, or display the BSOD (blue screen of death).

Why Connection Failed Error 651 Occur?

Error 651 highlights that an attempt at an internet connection was unsuccessful or an existing connection can be terminated. Lots of problems can trigger the alert, from the wrong placement of an SYS file, incorrect modem setup, corrupted registry files, an IP address conflict, and driver issues with your internet provider.

Method 1: To Fix Error 651 Enter Safe Boot

Step 1:

Simply restart your Windows 10 then log in to your Safe Mode using the networking features to apply the following modification.

Step 2:

After you enter in Safe mode you want to hit and hold the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut.

Step 3:

A Run window will appear.

Step 4:

Then type in the Run window the following command MSCONFIG.

Step 5:

Hit the Enter button on the keyboard.

Step 6:

Now another window display and you want to left-tap on the Boot tab located in the upper side of that window.

Step 7:

In the topic Boot options, you want to left-tap on Safe boot.

Step 8:

Then check the box located next to Network at the bottom of the Options section of the page.

Step 9:

Then reboot your Windows 10 device and view if you still have the Connection Failed error 651 appearing in your PC.

Method 2: Turn Off All Startup Services

Step 1:

Hit and hold the Windows button and the R button.

Step 2:

In the Run window that appeared simply write MSCONFIG.

Step 3:

Hit the Enter button on the keyboard.

Step 4:

Left-tap on the Boot tab.

Step 5:

Unmark the box located next to Safe mode.

Step 6:

Left-tap on the General tab.

Step 7:

From the features, you have there you want to move to Selective Startup.

Step 8:

Unmark the features to wipe the selections.

Step 9:

Left-tap on the Services feature and left-tap again on the Disable all button

Step 10:

Left-tap on the Startup tab and turn off each item you have on that list.

Step 11:

Then reboot your Windows 10 device.

Step 12:

After the device reboots go again to the MSCONFIG window as you did above.

Step 13:

Left-tap on the Services tab.

Step 14:

Left-tap on the Hide all Microsoft services feature.

Step 15:

Left-tap on the OK button you have on that window.

Step 16:

Again reboot your PC.

Step 17:

Check to view if you still have this problem.

Step 18:

If you don’t have this issue it means that your startup apps are causing the problem.

Step 19:

If you still face these problems then move back to the MSConfig window.

Step 20:

Left-tap on the General tab.

Step 21:

Left-tap on the Normal Startup feature.

Step 22:

Then select to Reboot the Windows 10 device.

Method 3: Rename rasppoe.sys File

Step 1:

When your Windows 10 powers up on the screen start, you want to left-tap on the Desktop icon.

Step 2:

But on the desktop PC, you want to double-tap on the My Computer icon to open it.

Step 3:

Double-tap on the C:/ drive to open it.

Step 4:

In the C:/ drive double-tap on the Windows folder to open it.

Step 5:

In the Windows folder just find the System 32 folder and double tap on it to open.

Step 6:

Here in the System 32 folder double-tap on the Drivers folder to open it.

Step 7:

In the Drivers folder, you want to look for the rasppoe.sys file.

Step 8:

Then rename that file rasppoe.sys.

Note: You can also rename the file rasppoe.sys_backup so that you still have it when you are done.

Step 9:

Simply download a new rasppoe.sys file using the Internet and copy it in that particular folder where you had the old one.

Step 10:

Once you download this file you simply unzip the contents and then again copy it to your Drivers folder.

Step 11:

In this step, reboot the Windows 10 device and view if you still have this problem.

Note: If you like to put the old rasppoe.sys file in the Drivers folder you can remove the one you installed and rename the earlier one you saved above. Simply rename the rasppoe.sys_backup file to rasppoe.sys and then reboot the device.

Method 4: Run Network Troubleshooter

Step 1:

Head over to Start > type control panel > then open Control Panel.

Step 2:

In the search box, input troubleshoot > choose Troubleshooting > tap on View All to list all the troubleshooting tools.

Step 3:

Choose and run the following troubleshooters: Incoming connections, Internet Connections, and Network Adapter.

Step 4:

Restart your PC and check your network connection.

When your Internet connection remains unavailable, simply try to run the built-in Network troubleshooter. You can also launch it from the Control Panel or the Settings page.

If you want to run the Internet Troubleshooter, you might also move to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshooter and choose Internet Connections.

Method 5: How To Reset TCP/IP

This method is also very effective:

Step 1:

Type cmd in the search box > right-tap on Command Prompt > choose Run as administrator.

Step 2:

Input the netsh int ip reset reset.log command > wait until the scanning process complete.

Step 3:

Restart your PC and check your Wifi connection.

Method 6: Network Drivers Updation

The method also scans the PC, fixes errors, and install any files that may be missing or faulty.

Step 1:

Initially, launch Device Manager > then locate your network adapter driver > right-tap on it.

Step 2:

Then select the option Update driver.

Step 3:

Restart your PC and check your Internet connection.

Out-of-date network drivers might also trigger error 651. If you want to fix the issue, remember that you’ve installed the latest network drivers on your system.

Method 7: Turn Off Autotuning

Step 1:

Initially launch Command Prompt as Administrator.

Step 2:

Input the Netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled command > press Enter > test your connection.

AutoTuning is an amazing feature that improves the performance of programs or apps depends on TCP. However, in some situations, this tool might do more harm than good, and turning off it might help you to resolve error code 651.

Alternatively:

You can also try these Windows 10 command prompts. Initially, you’ll want to open Command Prompt. In the Windows 10 taskbar search bar or from within Cortana, write Command prompt. Then choose Run as administrator > Yes. Then, write these command prompts, hitting Enter after each:

netsh int ip reset reset.log

This resets the Windows networking stack.

Netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled 

This turns off autotuning.

regsvr32 raspppoe.sys

This re-registers the raspppoe.sys file.
