TYPES OF TEXT MESSAGING IN DISCORD
Discord has two distinct types of text messages i.e Direct Messages and Channel Messages
Direct Messages:
These are private conversations between two users.
Channel Messages:
These are the text chat that is shared within the whole group on a specific channel.
Each type of message works in multiple ways having different rules. When Discord was first launched, administrators could delete or remove messages in bulk within the native UI of the Discord app. This caused issues with the Discord databases as too many admins would mass delete messages at the same time.
As a result, this functionality was wiped out from the native UI. Fortunately, while it’s not that easy as it was before, it is still possible to delete all of your Discord server’s messages.
HOW TO CLEAR CHAT IN DISCORD – DIRECT MESSAGES IN DISCORD
Technically, you cannot delete a Direct Message in Discord. Just close the chat panel so that you don’t see messages, and you can also remove your copy of a message so it disappears from your history. But the message remains there both in the other person’s chat panel and on the Discord servers. Here’s how to delete your local copy:
Step 1:
Firstly, Right-click on the user with whom you’ve exchanged Direct Messages and choose Message.
Step 2:
On the left side of the screen in the Direct Message panel, hover over the conversation and tap the X that appears.
Step 3:
The conversation goes away, at least on your end. Make sure there is no confirmation dialog, so don’t go tapping the X on conversations you might want to keep.
If you just want to hide a few Direct Message conversations, that’s all there is to it. If you want to delete channel messages, then here’s how to do so.
CHANNEL MESSAGES IN DISCORD
Just like Direct Messages, channel messages can be deleted using a few different methods.
There are three ways to delete channel messages in Discord.
MANUAL DELETION
The first way is to manually delete the message. Here’s how:
Step 1:
Firstly, Open the text channel that has the message that you want to delete.
Step 2:
Hover over the message until the three-dot icon appears on the far right. Tap on the icon, then choose Delete from the menu.
Step 3:
A window will open prompting you to confirm your selection. Tap the Delete button.
This works well if you just have a few problematic messages to get rid of. But it is obviously not suitable for getting rid of large quantities of text messages.
If you want to delete messages, then revert to one of the following methods.
USE A DISCORD BOT
The second way to ‘Clear Chat in Discord’ is to use a bot specially designed for message deletion. There are many bots you can select from. But currently, the MEE6 bot is the favorite among Discord server admins. Installing the MEE6 bot is quite simple.
Step 1:
Firstly, log in to your Discord server.
Step 2:
Then navigate to the MEE6 website.
Step 3:
Choose to Add to Discord and tap Authorize to enable the bot to work on your server.
Step 4:
Choose the appropriate server.
Step 5:
MEE6 will then ask you to allow permissions so that it can delete messages. Tap the Authorize button when prompted.
Step 6:
From the MEE6 control panel, allow the Moderation plugin. Once MEE6 is installed, you can utilize lots of commands to delete messages and more.
Once authorized, you can use some commands to clear messages. Use ‘!clear @username’ to delete a particular user’s previous 100 messages. Use ‘!clear 1000’ to remove the last 1000 messages on the channel. Also, you can change the number to reflect how many messages you want to delete, but the maximum number is 1000.
This is by far the simplest method for deleting a huge number of messages at once.
CLONE THE CHANNEL
If for some reason the MEE6 alternative doesn’t work for you, the last way to delete all the messages in a channel is to clone the channel. This necessary creates a fresh copy of the channel but doesn’t copy over the channel’s old message history.
Step 1:
Firstly, make a list of the bots you have on the channel, because cloning a channel doesn’t always copy them across.
Step 2:
Then right-click on the channel you want to clone.
Step 3:
Choose Clone Channel.
Step 4:
Then rename the cloned channel if you want.
Step 5:
Tap on Create Channel.
Step 6:
Delete the old channel.
Step 7:
Open the new cloned version and add any bots you need.
Cloning a channel will also add all of the users from the old channel and regenerate everyone’s permissions. Also, making it easier than creating a new channel from scratch. Now, all the messages in the old channel are gone, and your latest channel has the same settings.
