Comparison: Chrome Remote Desktop VS TeamViewer

Chrome Remote Desktop vs TeamViewer both of them is one of the best options to remotely access a device. Because both of them are cross-platform compatible and can easy to set-up. However, while there are many similarities amongst the applications, there are big differences as well.

The main difference underlying is that Chrome Remote Desktop is designed to remotely access a PC. Hence, you can’t use it to control a mobile. On the other hand, TeamViewer is more efficient and allows you to remotely access any device. So, if you are still confused between TeamViewer or Chrome Remote Desktop, here is a complete rundown of TeamViewer vs. Chrome Remote Desktop and which one you should use.

Comparison: Chrome Remote Desktop VS TeamViewer

TeamViewer

Compatiblity: Cross-platform

When we talk about cross-platform compatibility, then Chrome Remote Desktop or TeamViewer have a huge presence. To start with, CRD stands for Chrome Remote Desktop and it is a web app. Hence, it doesn’t need any extra installation and is more efficient to use. However, if you like to host remote access, you should install or download the CRD host app. But when Google is shutting down Chrome apps, CRD is the only web app in the future. On niche platforms such as Linux or Raspberry Pi, you can also use Chrome Remote Desktop through the Chromium browser.

Alternatively, TeamViewerrpvides a web and a standalone app. If you like to host remote access, you should install the TeamViewer standalone app. The application is available for a big number of platforms such as ChromeOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi, macOS, etc.

Apps Set up

Chrome Remote Desktop is extremely easy to set up. In case, you like to remotely access a device, just set up the Chrome Remote Desktop web app. For iOS or Android, you will have to install the mobile app. To maintain a remote session through a mobile, all you need to do is to log in using the same Google ID on both devices. Post that, input your PIN for connection authentication and you are good to go.

Random access on CRD works only between 2 Desktops or Laptops.

TeamViewer also follows the same process but I found the TeamViewer app needs a few attempts before it can maintain a connection.

Notable Features

CRD is a minimal app and it doesn’t provide any extra features worth mentioning. Both apps provide you the choice to register or sign up for your devices under one account.

Alternatively, TeamViewer provides a complete bunch of features that can suffice the need of any user. Foremost, you’ll then get a chat interface that comes quite handy as you have to communicate with the client. In addition to that, TeamViewer provides annotation flexibility, file transfer, etc. If you sign in or register, you can then monitor your remote devices and take remote backup.

Restriction

The big disadvantage of CRD is that you can’t access your mobile through the desktop. Additionally, if you like to remote control a random laptop, you can’t use a mobile. Random access needs another laptop. During the comparison, I didn’t find any restrictions on TeamViewer. The thing is it needs you to install separate apps on smartphones for remote control and host.

Privacy & Security

Security is another big concern in remote access because of the current scams. However, both these apps use AES/RSA to encrypt the connection. Hence, there are few chances of data being sniffed in the network. Quite similarly, both apps need password authentication or user-id when starting a random connection.

However, in TeamViewer when you are in the screen-sharing session, the desktop wallpaper change into black. Also, there is a dialog box under the right-hand side showing a screen sharing session. It makes you aware that you are in a screen sharing session and I can’t find anything identical on CRD.

Having said that, after you have started a screen-sharing session, the person has unlimited access to your files in both apps.

Pricing

Chrome Remote Desktop (CRD) is totally free by nature and there is no paid version of it. Also, I can’t able to find a limit to the number of PCs you can add to a single account.

The free TeamViewer account comes with an unsaid limit on the number of devices under an account. In case you exceed the limit, your account will be flagged.

For personal use, TeamViewer is totally free. The only issue is that you will get a pop-up after every session claiming it is a free version for non-commercial use. Hence, if you are deciding to use it for commercial purposes, you should opt for the paid version instead. TeamViewer offers different pricing initiating at about $19/month. The paid services provide extra capabilities such as maintaining various concurrent sessions, event logging, in-depth remote device information, much more.

Conclusion:

However, the best one is TeamViewer as compared to others. In case you like to manage your family devices, CRD is a good option. Besides remote file transfer, it provides important controls that can get work done in some cases. However, if you want to begin providing remote support to various individuals that have a different OS, TeamViewer also provides flexibility and a huge range of tools.
